"Let each person do his or her part. If one citizen is unwilling to participate, all of us are going to suffer. For the American idea, though it is shared by all of us, is realized in each one of us."

Congratulations to Gabriela Hanrahan, Barbara Jordan Ambassador for Winning the Student Category in the Barbara Jordan Media Award from the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities

Gabriela is an amazing deaf student and a sophomore at the Barbara Jordan High School for  Careers and she is also a member of the Barbara Jordan Ambassador's Program for students with unique abilities.

Mrs. Schur, BJHSC principal, staff, and the Barbara Jordan Endeavors Corporation and its Board of Directors are very proud of Gabriela for winning the Barbara Jordan Governor's Media Award. We are also pleased that Gabriela's father and mother are always in attendance at her monthly Ambassador meetings at the high school, BJE Workshops and actively supporting their daughter in pursuing her college education.

BJHSC would like to thank Gabriela's art teacher Marvin Howard and Thelma Scott, BJE Founder for assisting her with the application. Both were excited about Gabriela winning the art contest award and a special thanks to Gabriela's biggest supporter Mr. Tim Thorn, deaf and hard hearing teacher. Gabriela also has support from Mrs. Williams, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Coordinator, Mrs. Johnson, Special Education Teacher, Maria Martinez, Paraprofessional, Kenny Hernandez, BJEC Executive Administrative Assistant, Wendy Train, Volunteer
Coordinator and the fellow ambassador students. Their support was a collaborative partnership working together to encourage students with unique abilities that they can do anything anyone else can do if given the opportunity to strive for excellence and never give up, no matter what!

Gabriela's art work that was entered into the Governor's Barbara Jordan Media Award was # 1 in Texas. Each
year the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities, in conjunction with local committees throughout the state, accepts nominations for media professionals and students who have produced material for the public which
accurately and positively reports on individuals with disabilities, using People First language and respectful depictions.  Nominations can be submitted by anyone, including the producer of the piece, by
completing the submission form and sending it with any necessary supporting materials to the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities. A panel of judges, including media professionals and people with disabilities, score the entries and collectively select the winners. Each year the decisions for the judges become more difficult as more quality entries are received in the categories of Print Feature, Print News, Photojournalism, TV Feature, TV Documentary, and Special Contribution by an Organization, Internet, etc.

Again congratulations to Gabriela for being a Barbara Jordan Ambassador who has reached for the stars with her gifts and talents and landed the Governor’s Barbara Jordan Media Award!
